Abstract:
Dexamethasone is a potent corticosteroid widely used for the treatment of inflammatory and allergic conditions. However, conventional oral dosage forms suffer from first-pass metabolism, delayed onset of action, and reduced patient compliance, especially in pediatric and geriatric populations. The present review focuses on the formulation and evaluation of hydrogel-based oral films of dexamethasone as an innovative drug delivery system. Hydrogel-based oral films combine the advantages of hydrogels (high water retention, flexibility) and oral thin films (rapid disintegration, ease of administration). Various polymers such as HPMC, PVA, and sodium alginate are used for film formation, along with plasticizers and permeation enhancers. Evaluation parameters include thickness, folding endurance, swelling index, drug content, in vitro drug release, and stability studies. The hydrogel-based oral film system offers improved bioavailability, rapid onset of action, and enhanced patient compliance, making it a promising alternative to conventional dosage forms.
